IS MY PARTNER "SPYING" ON ME?
This is for those who assume that their partners are spying on their online activities. Maybe they are. Maybe they’re not. But here’s something to consider before jumping to conclusions that make them out to be snoopy, nosy spies.
Sometimes it’s not about spying at all. If you’ve been living in the same house with someone for a long time, they don’t get to know your habits, body language, feelings, moods, or anything else by spying on you 24/7. They get to know you almost by osmosis. They get used to your energy, and how you behave when your energy shifts or changes.
Do you realize, you are the one who taught them how to read your non-verbal signals? How, you ask? Well, when people share a home or are in a long-term relationship, they learn how to communicate quite efficiently with silent messages. A cold shoulder means one thing and a long, warm gaze means another. A certain posture tells them you’re upset or sad or not in the mood to talk, while another tells them you’re in the mood for romance. In some way, we teach those in relationships with us to read those non-verbal cues because it saves time, because those things often say what words can’t, and because we WANT them to be able to pick up on signals so they will know how we feel without having to use words. It’s fair to say that pretty much all humans in relationships do that.
So before accusing someone of spying on you, try to remember that they don’t NEED to do that to know what you’re up to because you, yourself, have taught them how to read you.
Remember, these are people who have loved you for a very long time. They loved you before they said, “Yes, I want to share your life.” They loved you so much that they wanted to learn every little thing about you, commit those things to memory so that they would know better how to make you happy. In those days, you thought that was a good thing, didn’t you? You had someone who cared THAT much. What a blessing!
But then something happened. Who knows what. It doesn’t matter. Now you don’t notice them all that much anymore. Now, maybe you notice other people online more than them. They see that. Do you think, after all that time of loving you and learning you, they’re NOT going to notice when you smile at your phone the way you used to smile at them? Do you seriously think they’re not going to notice when your energy shifts, and someone else online is getting the kind of attention you used to give to them?
Do you remember when you followed THEM online at the start of your relationship? How you dropped hearts and likes and comments on everything they posted? How you sent them regular private messages throughout the day? Yes, they remember that so clearly, it's etched into their memories. So when they see you regularly starting to behave that way online with someone else, of course they're going to notice! They're probably thinking, "Wait...I've seen this movie before. I was in it. I know how it ends."
Do you think they’re not going to notice if you go somewhere else in your home to text someone else, that they’re not going to notice something different in your eyes, your expression, or body language when you return to the room they’re in...that resembles the way you used to act with THEM? Do you think they won’t notice if you turn your phone face down all the time, turn off notifications so they won’t know about them, protect your phone with your life, turn your screen away, or flip it to something else at the speed of light when they approach you? They WILL notice. Because they have loved you so deeply and completely. They KNOW you.
And that, people, is why it is impossible to hide stuff from people who have loved you with every part of their being. There’s nothing they don’t know about the person they loved (or maybe still love). Nothing. They’ve made it their life’s mission to make you happy since your lives were joined. Perhaps you stopped feeling that way about them, but it might be a good idea to remind yourself now and then, that they might still be in love with you, and perhaps THAT is why they notice so much. You loved that about them in the beginning.
Perhaps the only reason some choose to call it “spying” now, is because they may be doing something that they know violates all the promises they made to be faithful.
Let’s flip this around for the sake of argument. Let’s say they are checking up on you. Well, did they check up on you since you began your lives together to ensure that you had what you needed every day? Lunches? Your favourite meals? Doctor’s appointments? Laundry? A clean home? A lift to go somewhere? Fix something broken around the house? Take care of you when you had the flu? They checked up on you to make sure you had everything you needed to feel happy and cared for.
If you want them to stop all of that now, ask yourself why. If you want them to keep doing all of those things while you secretly text other people online, also ask yourself why.
I’m not suggesting that people should stay in relationships where they are no longer happy. I’m saying it’s terribly unfair to keep reaping the benefits of holding onto someone who cares that much, while accusing them of spying when it “cramps your style.”
I’m also saying that “monogamy” STILL means one-on-one, not one-on-many. Exclusivity STILL means just you and your chosen person. Not “just you and me except when I feel like acting single online.”
Just things to consider.
